Personality: Daddy Issues ;; Yes, I know, it's probably weird for this to be the first paragraph. However, his attachment to daddy, whether blood or not, is the reason why he is a hunter. Not that... The fact he felt obligated by the end of it anyway meant anything... However, Dean stayed with his father long enough to become the man that he was when he found his brother and got him to help him find John Winchester. And his relationship with Bobby Singer isn't exactly any better. The only thing from Season 7 I'm mentioning is what reminded me of just how important this is. Dean was pretty much saying they couldn't lose their 'uncle' because he was far too important to them. He was spending the entire episode after Dick Roman had shot Bobby pacing back and forth, worried about Bobby and praying he'd recover. Meanwhile even after just hearing about John's death after saving his life, he was practically traumatized. Learning it was to save him later on? That made things even worse. In short, he had two dads and even though only Bobby did the parental 'Drop the gun we're playing catch' type things that helped him his year back with Lisa and Ben Braeden, John Winchester was still his father, and there is nothing to change that connection and how much he looks up to the man.
--John-specific ;; Through the course of Season 1, the mission was originally to find their father. Dean was originally doing this because, as he told Sam "Dad went hunting and hasn't been home in a few days" which did not exactly show much concern for Sam's opinion of their father, though it eventually became a goal for both of them. Dean treats John almost as though he can do no wrong in most cases. When Sam and John would fight when all three Winchester men were together, Dean would always side with John, which more than likely aided Sam's decision to go pursue a college education at Stanford. When it came to Dean being sent back in time by Castiel in season 4, Dean stood up for John to Samuel. Dean was practically acting as a guardian angel for both of his parents during that time sent back, despite how that was mostly to find something that would help them defeat Lilith. As the show continued, Dean would continue to think of their fathers advice of the past. He used his fathers journal whenever something was necessary for them to know, after all. Now, the difference in how he presents himself from when John is and is not there differs in the way that, while he is always carefree and childish, Dean seems to go to being an eighteen year old boy who wants nothing more than his fathers respect, so he goes wide eyed accepting orders and giving nothing but respect for the elder. One final aspect is how Dean does get jealous of his youngest brother. When they met 'Adam', originally, Adam mentioned how John would bring him to baseball games whenever he was around and Dean tried to be nonchalant about it, but he was jealous because John had never done anything like that with him and that was something that really hit Dean deep. However, for whatever John did not do as a fatherly father, in season 7 we get a glimpse of what Bobby did as a surrogate father.
--Bobby specific ;; Bobby has always been the father he needed but never had. While John was a fantastic father, he was a full-fledged hunter as well. That was where Bobby came in. Bobby is just as important in making either of the boys who they are today as John. In Season 7, it is shown that Dean was so used to hunting as a kid that when Bobby took him out one day, Johns intention being to train him to use guns with Bobby, Bobby had taken him to the park with a baseball. Bobby was there to be a father when John wasn't and Dean held as much respect for him as he did for John. Granted, the original reasoning may have been because John was such good friends with Bobby Singer, Dean held that immediate trust of 'Well if my dd likes you I like you.' When the series actually began, though, it is shown that Bobby was there for all hunters, especially the boys. Granted, Bobby can easily be an aid in why Dean enjoys drinking, potentially even why he began. In Season 5, when Raphael demands that Dean say yes to Michael, Dean continues to refuse, no matter what. "Say yes and we'll heal Bobby Singer. Say no, he'll stay in the hospital and never walk again" Dean took the longest pause there, Sam being threatened being second longest, if only because the effects of Sam having no lungs was evident right then and there. But Dean clearly cares more than enough that if Bobby's mobility, even, if threatened, he will find himself in a battle of morals or family.
Understanding ;; Now this ties into one of the later personality traits that is kinda confusing. however, he understands where people who make deals with demons for familial or seeming necessary reasons come from. He understands as much as he can about the bad guys having good streaks. Doooooes it mean he trusts them? Hell no. Dean doesn't even trust himself at points in the series which could EASILY be translated to EVER. When he was told to torture Alastair for information, he warned Uriel and Castiel that he would not come out the same man that went in. He was angry about it especially when he realized there was no other choice. When it comes to Sam, he understands where he was coming from when he drank demons blood for strength, but it ruined an important trust that is never able to fully be repaired. When it came to any demon in general that helped them, he does not trust them. This is shown by his working with Ruby, but never trusting her. He makes his distrust vocal, too. Whether it's with Ruby, a demon, or Bela, a human who gets dragged to hell. Those few strings of a bond are even severed completely as he drew away from them both to either allow them to die, or kill them, Bela and Ruby respectively. In the future, there will definitely be team-ups with demons. Hell in Season 5 they work with Crowley, if only because their goals are identical, but Dean sure as hell does not trust the now King of Hell. He also gets where people who make deals with Crossroads demons come from, especially those who make deals to save someone else. He gave a year of his life for Sam to come back to life at the end of Season 2, after all. That ruined his self-trust to begin with.
Immature ;; Dean is pretty much a little kid in an adults body. While he can easily be incredibly serious, he loves to just lay back and have a good time like a little kid. This personality trait can go to absolutely anything else mentioned in this personality section, but to extend on it, he seriously does like to joke around when he can, and his emotions have been known to get the better of him in a fight. Especially when pertaining to Sam.
Hot headed ;; Dean is quite tempermental. If there is something that worries or upsets him, and he doesn't let it be known right away, it'll be known in the form of it coming out in a RAGE. Or his being a bit too distracted in battle. Which is rare. It'll more be something that builds up even then before he hits the person that is behind his temper being risen to yelling and demanding the truth. Otherwise, Dean is full of himself at the same time as he is afraid of himself. He knows he is a handsome man and he flaunts that when he flirts. He knows his positive aspects, his negative... He has even called himself a 'well rounded guy' when Castiel asked him why he was not affected by Famine's grip.
Avoiding emotional relationships ;; Being a hunter, as well as being just afraid of lasting relationships, Dean has never been too into relationships for the length and the ability to just sit back and relax. There are only two people that he has ever been in one with, or wanted to be in one with. And at the end of season 5 he gets that wish of a long lasting relationship.
Skeptical to the good ;; Dean has dealt with so much of the bad that even the thought of there being good supernatural creatures was impossible before Castiel showed up. Even then, he was kind of iffy on the whole 'Well some things can be good I guess.' He doesn't believe in much of anything good, especially at the point he is being pulled from. His brother just went into Lucifers Cage for gods sake!
Loves the simple things ;; Dean loves the chance to have a bed to sleep on, television, porn, and food. He will be able to be an all around happier person to be around when he has a full stomach - good luck with that happening - and a television and maybe a magazine or two in front of him.
Appetite ;; This is something that can go to multiple aspects yet again! Dean has... Like a huge appetite when it comes to good. He loves to eat. If he doesn't eat, something's wrong. What's better, he likes to eat junk food and calorie infested foods. This is shown in Swap Meat when he orders himself a cheeseburger, fries, and like three other things for himself... Aaaaand a salad shake for Sam. However, that appetite can be for jobs. There have been times where he goes from 'Oh we finished a job? Here's another one we can do like right now' even if they're exhausted in the Impala. And yet another appetite he has, is for women. That is something that he loves to bits and pieces. Mmmmm women. Mmmmm sex.
Hunting habits ;; When Dean is in the hunting mode, he is STUCK in that mode. I don't care if he's joking around with you, he's a man on a mission. He is a ruthless hunter when he is met with whatever the foe and he will never stop being that ruthless violent hunter.
Anxiety from Hell ;; The guy has a fear of dogs. This KIND OF started in season 3 though after being dragged to hell by Hellhounds at the end... Kind of created an ever lasting fear of barks from a distance because that makes him think 'Oh shit they're coming for me again' and four months turned to 40 years feel wise? Not something he quite enjoys. He doesn't want to go back to hell and go back to the racks, after all.
Dependent on his brother. But doesn't fully trust him ;; Let's face it. When it comes to Sam, he gets himself into a load of shit. All the time. Every season. Seasons 1 and 2, alright, he didn't know what it was, but he was one of Azazels kids. Season 3, first of all in Mystery Spot for all Dean knew by the end was his brother had completely lost his mind on a random Tuesday. From there, it was the fear that something happened to him during his short time dead. After that, it was Ruby. Season 4, his brother was drinking demons blood. That's kind of something that pisses a guy off and can ruin trust. AND FINALLY. SEASON 5. "Oh well I'm apparently the true vessel for Michael" "Oh that's cool Dean, uh, listen. Lucifer just told me I'm HIS true vessel." And then he drank demons blood during Famines effect, and Dean was just a bundle of 'Why the hell is my brother an idiot that I can't really trust?'
Y'know what? Another section for Sam ;; His relationship with Sam can be extremely strained, as shown throughout all of the seasons thus far. Here. Allow me to break it down for you by an analysis by yours truly for each of the five relevant seasons.
--Season 1 ;; In season 1, the original strain between the Winchester brothers came from the fact Dean was gung-ho about finding their father and helping him while Sam was apathetic about the situation, it seemed. It moved into Sam suddenly being gung-ho for absolutely all of the wrong reasons, in Deans mind, even if he wouldn't admit to it. Later in the season, when his abilities as one of Azazel Special Children began to surface with no idea what it was from either brother, he began to get suspicious that something was wrong, but not entirely sure what. Of course, that was incredibly put on the back burner when his Impala was destroyed. However, that just helped for set up foooooooooooooooor...
--Season 2 ;; In Season 2, it starts off with a bang in the form of Dean being dead, brought back to life by John, told to protect Sam and there'll be a time where he may have to kill him. Now, this was before any of the real crazy happened, so Dean was concerned with that, of course. He wound up travelling with Sam who was getting worse and worse with the abilities from the Special Children. They even kept Sam's abilities a secret from the hunters they met, Ellen, Jo, and Ash. This was painful as they had become like family, but necessary as they didn't know what Sam was. As the seasons progressed, Dean got more and more suspicious of his brother, at one point reaching for items that go to the contrary of Sam going darkside. Unfortunately, that didn't work too well as seen in the episode where Sam went missing and Dean used Menthol cigarettes as an early, weak, attempt to get Sam to stop thinking it was him. The big showdown in the season came around and Dean was still clinging to the thought that he would be able to trust Sam no matter what. His attachment to his brother was shown when, at the end of All Hell Breaks Loose part 1 where Sam dies in his arms with Dean screaming his name. Sooooo he made a deal with a Crossroads demon who changed the original deal everyone got of ten years into one year. That would be one season where a bunch of crazy shit happened, but that's for later. The brothers, unforunately, didn't save the day, though, when Sam came back 'after being knocked out'.
--Season 3 ;; The countdown to Deans end has started and Sam just seems to have lost it in the Season 3 Mystery Spot. I mean, unknown to Dean Sam was getting pissed off at having a million Tuesdays. He listened, especially when Sam managed to do everything- Actually, as far as he knows that Tuesday he got a fear of dogs the same day his brother attacked a man who was eating pancakes who turned out the be the Gabriel the Angel, who at the time they only knew as the trickster, and then got extremely clingy the Wednesday after. However! They were told of a demon, Lilith, that would have to be killed by a blonde at the time, Ruby, that was trying to work with them. She was purposely putting strain on Deans trust of Sam, by the way. At one point in the season, after discovering Ruby was human BEFORE being a demon, he began to fear for what happened to Sam more than what happened to himself. I mean, he was going to hell, he was thinking he was ready for it. But what if Sam were to go crazy and start killing? Especially with a demon influencing his choices? Well, that caused the brothers relationship to be even more strained before Lilith finally took her claim at the end of the year and had Hellhounds completely ruin any true love of dogs that he could ever hold. Kind of gets destroyed when you get slashed and used as a Hellhound chewtoy, after all.
--Season 4 ;; I can sum up where this went in two sentence, but I won't. I mean I will, but I won't. Sam drank demons blood. Dean got pissed and found his trust in Sam collection severely lacking. Now, that wasn't all that affected what was going through his mind. It started when Sam was keeping things from him after Castiel dragged him back from hell. He still wanted to trust Sam so badly that he had to force himself to, but his brother was hiding something from him to begin with, and then it turned out to be drinking demons blood. This is one of those understanding but not really things. "I'm doing this so I can kill Lilith" "Oh that's great but fucking stupid" was essentially all conversations on the matter. Granted, Sam definitely got plus points when at the end of the seasons, realizing that Ruby was an evil bitch, he held her in place as Dean stabbed her with her own knife, but it wasn't nearly enough for how much he had lost. Oh Sam killed Lilith but freed Lucifer but that's only necessary for the transition tooooooo
--Season 5 ;; The FINAL installment in this little summary for the relationship between brothers, Dean knew that Sam could not have possibly known Lilith was the final seal, but he was still pissed off about... Well everything else he had done. Especially the demons blood. This season was a big one, though. The big Apocolypse now type situation. Dean was contacted by Angels, including the ever lovely Raphael the Seraph, to be told that he was Michael, the archangels, true vessel. Dean essentially gave a giant 'Fuck dat' to them. However, Sam eventually had an encounter with Lucifer in a temporary vessel. When he called Dean, Dean was immediately afraid he would give in at some point, because hey! Guess who was Lucifers true vessel! If you guessed Sam Winchester, you're correct! What made the fear and distrust in Sam all the better was when Raphael sent Dean to a horrible future where Sam gave into his pre-written destiny and became Lucifers vessel. Where it was too late for anything. Sam also gave in when Famine came to one of the towns they were visiting, Sams hunger for demon blood returning full force. However, at the end of the season, Sam had thrown himself with Lucifer inside, a plan the brothers had come up with, into Lucifers cage. Unfortunately with their half brother. This once again raised Deans trust for his brother and belief. And Dean in a car is where we leave off.
The most important ladies ;; Dean has two ladies that have made a definite impact in his life. His mother died when he was at an incredibly impressionable age. and in quite a traumatizing way that followed the beginning of the show where it shows what happened on Supernatural for about a season and a half. He saw his mother multiple times throughout the series though, one being when he went back in time thanks to Castiel. "Sam, mom was a babe" is something he had said to himself. He had also told her to stay in bed on the day she died, tears in his eyes the entire time. Especially since he discovered they weren't living the life she wanted for them. Oh! You're probably wondering about the second lady. The Impala. The Impala is his one true love. The longest relationship she has ever had is with that car and there is nothing to stop that from being true. There are things in that car that have been there since he and Sam were little kids that when he has to rebuild the car like he did in Season 2? He keeps. The Impala is a very important part of him, after all.
